FAQ: EMail: POP3 Settings

Since you are at this page you probably already have a POP3 Account, if you do not then please read the FAQ about mail services under domains or go to our pop3 server to configure a mail account: http://pop3.bitshop.com

Generic Setup Instructions:
Setup in Microsoft Outlook
Setup in Microsoft Outlook 2002 / 11
Setup in Microsoft Outlook Express
Setup in Netscape 7 Mail:
Setup in Eudora / Eudora Pro:

Generic Setup Instructions:

SMTP Server Name smtp.bitshop.com
POP3 Server Name pop3.bitshop.com

When you set up your mailbox you will be assigned a mailbox number, something like mail9876 - this is your POP3 username.

Our SMTP server requires authentication. The login / password to authenticate is your mailbox username / password.  If you get an error like server is not configured to relay mail for xyz@<somewhere>.com from myname@<yourname>.com this is because you have not authenticated.  This will not effect web server scripts which send mail.

These values will be filled into your mail programs POP information, some programs prompt in slightly different ways; below is an explanation of each.

If your mail software does not supported authenticated send then you can use your dial up providers smtp server (sending mail and receiving are completely unrelated; see below); or if you have a static IP address we can allow you to connect from that IP without authentication.  Most business DSL connections are a static IP. As a last resort you can use your dial up providers SMTP server, they can authenticate by knowing you dialed in through them so they should allow anything through. Since you don't dial into our network directly we are forced to authenticate with a username / password.

Setup in Microsoft Outlook 98 / 2000:

  1. If you don't already have a profile create a new profile.  The service you will be using is "Internet E-Mail".    If you already have a profile go to tools - services - Internet E-Mail - click Properties.

  2. Under Servers: The last checkbox - My Server Requires Authentication - this must be checked. If you click settings it should be set to Use Same Information as my incoming mail server.

  3. NOTE: Outlook 97 does not support authenticated send.  You must upgrade to Outlook Express (free with Internet Explorer), Outlook 98, or Outlook 2000.
