You can get notified anytime someone or something is mentioned on the Internet?
Of course you have to pick your search terms carefully, especially if the person has a popular name. Take myself, “Steve Radich” and perhaps you want to know any new pages mentioning BitShop's founders' name and BitShop, you could search google for “Steve Radich” BitShop – Don’t forget the “s, you can sign up with and without the person’s middle name/initial.

Why would you want to do this?

How convenient would it be to KNOW something new about a client or potential client?
Imagine their surprise when you call them up and say “hey, I see you were mentioned in the paper today”.. or “I see you were recommended by ___”.. Most likely they will be surprised and probably not even know about the event yet themselves, unless it’s something they wrote. Even if it’s something they wrote and you say “congratulations, I found your new blog post very interesting”… You’ve now struck up a conversation and stuck out in their mind.

I got this idea after a networking event (thanks Marcus) and decided to try it out to see if anything “useful” popped up about clients, I put in a few new clients.
The second day I got a result of a pdf newsletter from a client who doesn’t have a newsletter (near, eh?). It was from 2004, almost 5 years old. I’d question a little why google hadn’t found it previously, however she didn’t intend to have it online. It struck up a conversation that started with great newsletter, why’d you stop? Have you considered doing this again online..
Now the client has put the newsletter into blog format on their web site and hopefully it got their brain thinking again about how successful the newsletter was – This leads to ideas of how to format a blog, what to write about, and more.
It both helped our relationship expand with the client and helped the client because now we could brain storm together on how to enhance their site even more.
Had I not had this information the only follow up we could have done is something like ‘How’s it going with the new web site?’ – Much less interesting conversation, would you agree?
Google provides a free service called “Google Alerts” – These email you whenever a new page is found on the internet matching your search terms.
I have made a blog post which shows a video of adding an alert on google, you can play this video, pause, rewind, etc. as needed to go whatever pace you wish.
